How Much Does It Cost to 3D Print?
The filament for a small print is often less than a dollar, so everyone says 3D printing is cheap. It is not, once you count power, machine wear, the prints that fail, and your own time. I print most days on a Bambu H2S, and I actually track the per-print cost, because a failed print throws away the plastic AND the hours, and that adds up. The short answer
A small part costs 20 to 50 cents in plastic. That part is real, but it is not the whole cost. The print draws power for hours, wears down nozzles and belts, and ties up the machine the whole time. Some prints fail and that plastic goes in the bin. And you spend real time loading the file, clearing the bed, and cleaning up the part. Count all of it and a "cheap" print usually runs a few dollars, with your own time as the biggest line by far.
The cost pieces
Five things make up the cost of a print, plus packaging if you sell. None of it is hard math, and once you have it set up you stop guessing.
Material
This is the filament you actually use. Take the grams the slicer reports, divide by 1000, and multiply by your filament price per kg.

Typical PLA and PETG run about $10 to $30 per kg. A 50 g part at $20/kg is 50 / 1000 × 20 = $1.00 of plastic.
Electricity
The printer draws power the whole time it runs. Multiply watts by hours, divide by 1000 to get kWh, then multiply by your rate.

A typical FDM printer pulls about 100 to 150 W once the bed is up to temperature. At 120 W for 3 hours that is 0.36 kWh. At $0.15/kWh that is about 5 cents. Power is usually the smallest line on the sheet.
Machine wear and depreciation
The printer is not free and it does not last forever. Spread its price across the hours you expect it to run, then charge that per print hour.

Roughly $500 of printer spread over about 4,000 printing hours is about $0.125 an hour. The nozzles, hotends, belts, and build plates you replace across those hours add roughly $0.075 more, so $0.20 an hour is the all-in number. A 3 hour print carries $0.60 of it.
Failed prints
Prints fail. A bad first layer, a knocked-over part, a clog halfway through, and the worst ones fail late so you lose hours of running too. This is the line people pretend does not exist, and it is the one that actually hurts. Add a buffer to every print so the good ones cover the bad ones. Five to fifteen percent of the running cost is a sane range. Tune it down as your success rate climbs.
Your time and labor
On small parts this line dwarfs everything else, and it is the easiest one to skip. You slice the file, level or check the bed, start the print, pop the part off, and clean up stringing or supports. That is your time, so put an hourly rate on it. Even 15 minutes of hands-on work at $20/hour is $5, which beats the plastic, power, and wear put together on a small part.
Post-processing and packaging
If a part needs sanding, priming, gluing, or painting, the consumables and the extra time count too. Selling adds boxes, padding, and shipping. These are easy to leave off a quote and they quietly eat your margin.
A worked example
Numbers make this concrete. Say you print a 50 g part. It takes 3 hours on a 120 W printer. Your filament is $20/kg, your power is $0.15/kWh, your machine wear runs $0.20 an hour, and you value your time at $20/hour with about 15 minutes of hands-on work.
- Material: 50 / 1000 × $20 = $1.00
- Electricity: 120 × 3 / 1000 × $0.15 = $0.05
- Machine wear: $0.20 × 3 = $0.60
- Failure buffer (10% of material, power, and wear): 10% × $1.65 = $0.17
- Labor: 0.25 h × $20 = $5.00
That puts the true cost near $6.82, call it $6.80. The plastic was a dollar. Labor was most of the bill. If you sold this part you would not charge $6.80, you would add a markup. A 50 percent markup makes it about $10.20; doubling the cost makes it $13.60. The plastic-only view said one dollar, and the real selling price is several times that.
Pricing prints to sell
Cost and price are not the same number, and conflating them is how you end up working for free. Cost is what the print takes out of your pocket. Price is what you charge, and it needs a markup on top of cost so the work returns a profit. Decide on a margin and apply it to the full cost, not to the filament alone. The most common beginner mistake is pricing off the plastic and undercharging, which means working for free once labor and failures are counted. If a print costs you $7 to make, $7 is your floor, not your price.
How to cut the cost
- Tune your profiles so prints stop failing. A reliable profile is the cheapest upgrade you can make, because every failure wastes both plastic and hours.
- Lower infill where the part does not need the strength. 15 percent is plenty for most display pieces and uses far less plastic than 50 percent.
- Reduce supports by reorienting the part. Less support means less wasted plastic and less cleanup time.
- Buy filament in bulk. Multi-roll packs drop the price per kg, and your material cost falls on every print.
- Keep the printer maintained. Clean nozzles, tight belts, and a level bed mean fewer failed prints and a longer machine life, which spreads the depreciation thinner.
