What actually drives the cost of a print
Filament is the cheap part. A 20 g bracket from a $25 spool is fifty cents of plastic. The real money hides in everything else: printer wear and eventual repairs, electricity (especially on a heated chamber), and the prints that fail. That is why this calculator itemizes all of it instead of multiplying grams by spool price and calling it a cost. I print mostly ASA on a Bambu H2S and slice in OrcaSlicer. Every number the calculator asks for comes straight off the slice screen: the slicer already reports grams of material and print time per job, so there is nothing to guess.
Filament density reference
Slicers report weight directly. If you only have a part's volume, density converts it: grams = cm³ times the value below. Prices move around, so treat the ranges as typical for 1 kg spools of the ordinary stuff, not carbon-filled or specialty blends.

How much does it cost to 3D print something?
For a small FDM part, usually under a dollar of filament. The real all-in cost lands at two to five times the material once you count electricity, machine wear, and the occasional failed print. Big parts, ASA, and resin push it higher. Run your own numbers above; the material line will rarely be the biggest one.
How do I price 3D prints for sale?
Cost first, then markup, never the other way around. This calculator gives you the honest cost floor; the Pro panel on this page adds your labor, post-processing, and a markup you can defend, and turns the result into a customer quote. Pricing at filament cost alone is how people pay for the privilege of running a print farm.
How do I find out how much filament a print uses?
Your slicer tells you before you print. OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, and Cura all show grams of filament and estimated print time on the slice preview. Enter those two numbers here and the cost breakdown does the rest.
Is resin printing more expensive than FDM?
Per part, usually yes. Resin is priced per litre and a failed resin print wastes material you cannot recover, plus you pay for isopropyl alcohol and the wash-and-cure cycle. Switch the calculator to Resin mode and it prices by millilitre with the wash and cure power included.
